I had mentioned previously that I had a water leak in my bathroom and had to change the flooring in our adjacent bedroom. In the process I have decided to do a lot of spring cleaning. I am also in the middle of a little spring cleansing of my liver. I have discovered a strong kidney connection with the liver.

The liver and kidney are perhaps the two most important internal organs. The liver, the largest, serves many functions. In Chinese medicine, it is referred to as the “General” or “Chief of Staff”. It stores, regulates, and circulates blood. It excretes bile for digestion and cleanses the blood as it filters and excretes ammonia, heavy metals and dyes. It also helps with metabolism and blood sugar level management. Other functions include detoxification and hormone regulation.

For those who have had kidney stones or dealt with other kidney health issues, the liver plays a mutual part in maintaining good kidney health and overall health. One of the instances where this is apparent is with the processing of proteins. The liver helps digest the protein and the kidneys eliminate the remaining wastes. This is why in part a reduction in harder to digest proteins, such as red meats, is recommended for kidney stone sufferers and kidney patients.

In a January 1988 issue of the Mayo Clinic Health Letter, liver and kidney function problems were considered one of the primary contributors to  Alzheimer’s disease. This and many other sicknesses are due to the body’s inability to circulate and absorb the nutrients it needs. A clean liver will perform its functions better and help the kidney to do the same. A weakened liver can also lead to reduced vision, stiffness, numbness, dizziness, lower energy levels,a reduction in memory, and even hemorrhoids.
