First, I am happy to say my laptop finally is fixed. I am very much a health nut and for good reason. I know I feel and perform better as such. I actually crave healthy foods because they energize my body and mind. The challenge as an airline pilot is finding the types of foods that accomplish the mission desired, optimum health. As a result, I typically pack many of the foods that otherwise would not be available on the road.

An alkaline diet has been shown to promote better kidney health and overall health. On the pH scale, alkaline would be the opposite of acidic. Foods that are alkaline are primarily fruits and vegetables, although all vegetables are not necessarily alkaline. For that matter, even a fruit such as a banana can be alkaline when ripe, but acidic when green.

The typical american diet is acidic. This is due to the dominance of meats, dairy products, breads, cafefeine, alcohol, bad fats such as hydrogenated oils, salt, sugar, and other food additives. Many of these acidic foods are necessary for health, but are well over consumed, while alkalanizing fruits and vegetables are well under consumed. For some, a leaf of lettuce might be the farthest one tries to go in having veggies.

A diet overly rich in animal proteins and lacking in vegetables typically leads to a condition called acidosis. This condition is one in which degeneration of the body is more likely to occur. Scientists have linked hip fractures to these same factors. When the body is too acidic, it most reduce the acidity by releasing calcium and magnesium from the bones.

The American diet typically is about 80 percent acid producing and 20 percent alkaline producing. This ratio should be 80-90 percent alkaline producing  and 10-20 percent acid producing.
